I wanted to say hello to you all as I am a new member to this board. I am a relatively new BC fan as my daughter is a current student. I used to be a big college football fan back in the day, her going to BC got me back into it. Absolutely love the school/ campus and take every opportunity I can to drive the 5 hours to see her or attend a football game. I attended the Missouri, NC State, and Syracuse games this year (2 of which were terrible performances). The question to you guys is when was the last time Alumni was consistently packed with fans? Attendance seemed pretty lite at those games. I love the intemacy of the stadium. Is BC way down the spectrum of Boston sports? Thanks, I have enjoyed reading the conversations here. Yeah BC is a non-factor in the greater Boston sports scene. It doesn’t have to be this way and wasn’t always. BC usually averages (in non-COVID times) probably around 40k for a game. They’ll sell out for ND and Clemson.

Definitely not 40K per game on average. Usually BC averages around 32,000 fans per game. Boston College is in the middle of one of the most passionate professional sports markets in the country. They could be bigger if they marketed themselves better locally. There’s absolutely no reason NOTRE DAME should have a bigger loyal fan base in Boston.

Ok, I just looked it up. BC's five year average was 34k.

It's a joke that ND has more fans in Boston than BC. I'd say that's a combination of winning football and deceptive marketing.

How a French school in the middle of a cornfield in Indiana co-opted Irish pride from the school founded by Irish Catholics in a bastion for Irish immigrants in Boston is amazing.

Notre Dame does a much, much better job of marketing itself than BC. And it has never made the fatal mistake of adopting the philosophy that fine academics and superb athletic teams are a dichotomy. They have never lost sight of the fact that they need their elite sports team to sustain their image A couple of years ago, I had an interesting exchange with a Boston cop who works traffic at the BC games. He told me he hates BC and is an ND fan. Anticipating his answer, I asked him what was the reason behind his intense dislike of BC, and he cited, in so many words, our perceived "elitism." Now why he doesn't perceive ND as being elitist is anyone's guess; I just keep returning to the fact that ND has had and still has, marketing geniuses at the helm.

That’s an interesting exchange with the cop. Maybe it’s that he sees the elitism of BC students and alumni up close, whereas ND only exists in an abstract sense as to whatever he wants to make it.

I agree with janebc that good academics or good athletics need not be a black or white choice. It was said that Kelly got 3 players every year who didn’t meet NDs academic standards. I’d be fine with not having any standards for the whole team. As far as I’m concerned, these are de facto minor league teams and if a kid wants to take basket weaving, so be it. If he wants to take real classes, all the better, but winning football games is the reason he’s there.

The Flutie Effect (and, to some degree, the Ryan Effect), demonstrate what good athletic programs do for a school. Now the fact that both Flutie and Ryan were competent students doesn't change the fact that a high profile football/basketball team can reap great rewards in the applicant pool

So you would say BC has some of the toughest standards which keeps them from being a consistent top 25 program?

As far as marketing I wouldn't have any idea on that one since I am not local. As far as merchandising seems difficult to find hats/ shirts / etc.

As far as the click bait comment, not sure I follow that one.

What is your problem dude. I came on the board to talk BC football/ etc. I never said the SU game was at Alumni. It was at the Carrier Dome, I took my son.
